Data has grown exponentially over the last two decades.  This is a result of heavier reliance on computers, many different channels to use and collect data from, and last but not the least, storage becoming cheaper, more accessible and affordable where users do not feel the need to purge or clean up data due to cost constrains.

With that said, hardware and servers need to be replaced and upgraded overtime. System administrators can find it rather challenging and daunting task when it comes down to the time where data needs to be migrated to the new server or location. In the past, 20GB data set or 50,000 files was the normal average.  Nowadays, even the average varies from one industry to another. Doctors, lawyers, and law enforcement could have millions of files with Terabytes of total size as their data set.

A small user office could have 300GB of data set size and 250k files total.

This has resulted in the need to use file migration software to better handle the migration of the data from the old server to the new location. There are some free utilities that could be used to complete the migration but with such large data set and the fact that data integrity is critical, a proper file migration software needs to be properly vented, tested and chosen.

Some of the key factors to select a file sync software can be:

1) Features:  File sync software could differ from others based on the feature sets they offer. Some of these features could be similar to copying open files, copy NTFS permissions, multithreading, block level copying.

2) Ease of use: Some of the data migration software these days is easy and user friendly while others can be very intimidating causing the system administrator wanting to shy away due to their complexity.

3) Cost:  cost can be a decisive factor in terms of whether management would consider paying for the file migration software or not. It depends on the company budget, time line, and the return on investment.
