Where we can store data easily.

Whether data is stored locally or in the cloud, everyone knows it exists and every IT administrator must take ownership of it. From time to time, a system administrator may find himself or herself in need to migrate that data from one place to another. Whether because they are standing new servers and refreshing hardware or because they are moving data centers (colocation or going to or from cloud), or just really wants to just keep another copy of the data at a different location for disaster recovery purposes.

Data migration cutover is not an easy task that can be pulled off overnight especially as the data set gets more complex as in numerous file shares, millions of files and folders, complex permissions, downtime allowed, user communications and the list can go one. So while the task in its name sounds straight forward and simple, what goes behind the scenes cab be a sophisticated beast that needs to be ironed out.

Make no mistake, things can get much more complex when deciding which file migration software can be utilized in this migration. A good tool used as file migration software once before does not make it the right tool for this task. It all depends on the limitations, features, and requirements.

System administrators should always focus on the “file copy tool” as each copy tool offers arrays of features, comes with different price tags (there are free ones) and ultimately doing POCs  (proof of concept) is crucial when trialing new file migration software.

One of the most common file copy utilities used these days is richcopy. It is a tool designed by a Microsoft developer and was discontinued in 2009. That file copy tool was a good tool that is still being used but was has a few serious bugs. Those bugs could surface from some admins in certain environments, yet no one will confirm it until some testing is done. Preferably, not on production dataset.
